Aug. 1: Daniel Leon Visual Artist’s Lecture:
Cultural Council of Yuma and the City of Yuma Arts and Culture Division presents Daniel Leon Visual Artist’s Lecture in Classroom No. 2 at Second Floor of the Yuma Art Center on Friday, August 1, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. This Seventeen years old local artist Daniel Leon will explain his artwork and why he considers himself a surreal and symbolism artist. He is the winner of the First place in the Grand Canyon State Games Art Contest in 2008, Fifth place on Cesar Chavez Art Contest in 2007 and the Second place on the congressional art competition “An Artist Discovery” in 2007. Aug. 1 & 3: Seussical Jr.: Yuma Art Center Youth Summer Theater Camp Presents, “Seussical Jr. Afantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once On This Island, and Ragtime) have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie, and all of the Whos of Whoville. These classic, colorful tales are seamlessly brought together by Jojo, a young boy and “thinker of strange and wonderful thinks”! As each story unfolds you will marvel at how relevant and profound Seuss’s subtle themes are; making this musical one that appeals to all ages. The score emerges as a Seussian gumbo of musical styles, ranging from Latin to pop, swing to gospel, and R&B to funk! Tickets will be sold at the door. Prices are $5.00 per adult, $3.00 per child 11 and under.
Aug. 7: Sun Cinema Series – Fourth Anniversary Celebration: Special screening of four shorts prior to the feature ‘The Grocers Sun’ – drama, with French & English subtitles. 6pm. $3 per person.
Aug. 12: Poetry Reading: Sign up for ‘Open Mic’ and share your original poetry or poems by your favorite poet. Sponsored by 33.10, AWC Creative Writing Dept., and the Yuma Art Center. 7pm, $2 at the door.

Aug. 26 & 27: Concert: ‘Snapshot of America’: The 26th Army Band presents ‘Snapshot of America featuring patriotic marches, medleys, show tunes and vocals. 7pm, admission is Free, but tickets are necessary - limit 4 per person. Aug. 27: Poetry Writing Workshop: Meet with others who love writing poetry as much as you do and share creative ways to express your thoughts. Ages 18-Adult. 6pm-8pm. $6.

Lunchtime Lecture Series
You’re invited to bring your lunch and spend an hour at the Yuma Art Center Galleries enjoying a free lecture or performance twice a month.
Sponsored by the City of Yuma Arts & Culture Division.

Aug. 1: Getting to Know Your Parks & Rec Department with Becky Chavez: Noon - 1:00 pm. Becky Chavez was appointed Director of the Parks and Recreation Department on May 9, 2007. Prior to being appointed, she recently served as interim director and for many years as Assistant Director. Becky began her career at Yuma Parks and Recreation as a part-time Recreation Instructor in 1991. She was promoted to Recreation Supervisor and later to the Arts and Culture Division Director before being asked to accept the position of Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation which she held for six years.
Aug. 15: Discover Your Family History: Presented by Betty Gottsponer. Noon -1pm. Free.

Classes & Activities
Family Friday/Viernes Familia:
Explore the wonderful world of painting, story telling, music, and movement with your young child in this bilingual class. Held on Fridays until Aug. 8, from 9:30 am - 10:30 am & 11:00 am – Noon. Ages birth - 5 years Registration is $20.00 for non-residents, and $13.00 with a city resident credit (per family up to 2 children). $5.00 for each additional child.
Stamping the World: Saturdays, August 2 & 9 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. Using rubber stamps and a variety of painting techniques, kids will learn how to make cards, book covers, and other items embellished with bits and pieces of fun stuff! Ages 5 - 12 years. Registration is $17.00 for non-residents, and $11.00 with a city resident credit.
Latin ballroom Dance: Beginning Dance - 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Beginning Dance II - 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Held On Tuesdays and Wednesdays until Aug. 20. Enjoy the exciting art of Latin Ballroom dancing. Learn the basics of several different dances. Registration is $5.00 payable to the Yuma Art Center, and $40.00 payable to the instructor at the first class.
