Make
Sure Your Next Business Event is Earth Friendly and “Green”
By Joan Burns, Event Planner Extraordinaire
It can’t be
ignored anymore, if we don’t take care of our planet now, the
future of our environment is in peril. Most folks make an effort
in their homes. They use solar power, recycle and reuse, but can
those practices be taken into the Business Meeting, Conference or
Event? Happily the answer is “Yes”!
Here a few tips on
how to “Go Green” and still plan a successful event.
- Set your
Eco-friendly goals. Make sure the stakeholders are committed to a
sustainable event. Are they willing to support organic foods or
alternative energy even it means trying something new?
- Choose a venue
that has a recycling program in place. Perhaps an historic
building such as a museum might work in place of a hotel
ballroom. And make sure the site is near public transportation to
encourage the less usage of cars and other fuel burning vehicles.
- If
transportation to the location is necessary, promote carpools and
shuttles from Park and Ride locations. Rent bicycles for
attendees and supply bike rack areas.
- Use electronic
registration via the internet and save paper and printing costs.
Print double-sided handouts and use recycled paper for printed
meeting materials. Instead of Flip Charts on easels, use white
boards and non-toxic water based markers during presentations.
Recycle name badges and holders.
- Look for
organic caterers. Use large containers of beverages and condiments
versus single servings, and use real glasses, plates and utensils.
Use reusable tablecloths and napkins on the tables. Also check to
see if left over food is donated to a charity or maybe used in a
compost. Are glass and plastics recycled at the end of the
event?
- Try to hold
outdoor events during the day to use real solar power, but if you
must use a generator, try to find one that uses bio-diesel fuel.
- Print banners
without dates to enable reuse. Use live plants, natural materials
or even community garden produced flowers for centerpieces and
decorations. Donate the plants to schools or charities after the
event.
- Use vendors
that are committed to green practices.
If you implement
only a few of the tips mentioned in the planning of your next
meeting or event, you will make a difference!

Our Mission: "Big Blend Magazine is a company based on the belief that education is the most formidable weapon that can be waged against fear, ignorance and prejudice.
It is our belief that education starts at
home and branches outward. Education leads to travel, and
travel leads to understanding, tolerance, and appreciation
of cultures and customs different to our own, and ultimately
to world peace. Our company is further based on the
principle that networking, communication, and helping others
to promote and market themselves leads to financial
stability; thus paving the way to better education, travel,
and the spirit of giving back to the community."
