Tombstone is located in the high desert at 4540 feet, about 200 miles from Phoenix, just 70 miles from Tucson, and close to the Mexican border. With approximately 1200 residents, 13 inches of rain per year and an average high of 90 degrees in the summer, people flock here for a glimpse through a window into the historic old west. Founded by a prospector Ed Schieffelins, and named after his first silver claim, Tombstone was incorporated in 1881. During the next decade, it quickly drew thousands of miners to the area to strike it rich. Millions of dollars of gold and silver processed from the mines there, before underground waters and the declining price of silver closed them. With all the prospectors still left there, the town became known for its crime and violence which culminated with the famous Earp-Clanton gunfight at OK Corral. In the years following, Tombstone became one of the more technologically advanced towns in the west, boasting telephones and electricity The great depression, the flood, and the moving of the county seat in 1904 all but ended the boom, but Tombstone stayed alive relying on its historic western decor and the re-enactment of the historic gun battles of the times, becoming know as The Town to Tough to Die.
