About Scottsdale, Arizona
In central Arizona
just east of Phoenix, with access to both I-17 and I-10, Scottsdale’s
234,000 residents sit at 1,260 feet above sea level and enjoy a moderate
year-round climate, with 330 days of sun and an average temperature of
73 degrees. Millions of tourists each year are attracted to the Tonto
National Forest, Casa Grande National Monument, and the Aqua Fria
National Monument - all within a 50 mile driving distance of Scottsdale.
Incorporated in 1951,
Scottsdale is known for its abundance of art galleries, golf courses,
and popular retirement communities.
Originally occupied by
the Hohokan Tribe [called prehistoric desert people] from 200 B. C. to
145 A. D., the Hohokan people were known as the most skilled irrigation
farmers in the southwest and developed some of the most elaborate canal
systems ever made, and some are still in use today. This highly
developed culture saw the importance of communicating with the local
neighbors and where the first people to initiate trade between them (Anasazi
and Mogollan tribes).
Today, Scottsdale’s
superior climate affords a wide variety of recreational activities
including hiking, horseback riding, golf, and tennis.
