About Patagonia, Sonoita & Elgin, Arizona

Patagonia rests among rolling grass hills, woodlands, land just perfect for cattle and horses and the Santa Rita and Patagonia Mountains. With an elevation of just over 4000 feet, Patagonia has a beautiful climate with four distinct seasons plus summer monsoons and cool summer evenings. The diversity in terrain and climate makes it a premier birdwatching destination with well over 250 species of birds that migrate from Mexico to the southeastern tip of Arizona each year. It is a good place to grow grapes, hence there are local wineries and the area has a colorful history encompassing Native Americans, Spaniards, Mexicans, ranchers, Jesuit priests and miners.

The Patagonia Mountains were rich with silver and lead, leading to the development of mining towns like Mowry, Harshaw, Washington Camp and Duquesne in the late 1800s. The arrival of the New Mexico and Arizona Railroad that connected the area to Mexico in 1882 led to the development of nearby Sonoita and Elgin. The Benson-to-Nogales Railway began to stop at Patagonia three times a day. Today, that railway depot houses the Town Hall and the mining towns have all become ghost towns. The cattle ranches remain a vital part of the areas' economy and Patagonia is now a charming, community-minded town with visible historic elements, specialty shops and art galleries. It offers plenty of places to hike, bicycle, horseback ride, birdwatch and is home to the largest lake in southern Arizona.
