Overview
  Wide open spaces characterized by the famous 1947 "flying saucer" crash, the Roswell Incident and ensuing annual UFO festival; the stories of Billy the Kid who rose to fame in Lincoln and is buried on the Old Fort Sumner Museum grounds; Fort Sumner State Monument where Navajo and Mescalero Apache Indians were confined after the Long Walk of the 1860s; the Capitan Mountains, former home of Smokey Bear, black bear cub who became famous after surviving a forest fire; and the fascinating Carlsbad Caverns National Park known for its stalagmites and stalactites and resident bat population.
  Attractions include the Blackwater Draw Archaeological Site, Bottomless Lakes State Park, Brantley Lake, Clovis Depot Model Train Museum, Fort Sumner State Monument, Hubbard Museum of the American West, Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame, International UFO Museum, Lincoln State Monument, Living Desert and Gardens State Park, Pecos River Walk, Roswell Museum/Art Center, National Solar Observatory, the New Mexico Museum of Space History, Oasis State Park, Oliver Lee State Park, Santa Rosa Lake Park, Smokey Bear's Gravesite and Historical Museum, Summer State Park, Three Rivers Petroglyph National Recreational Site, the Valley of Fires Recreation Area, Villanueva State Park,  and White Sands National Monument.There are also Casinos, Ruidoso Downs Racetrack and Billy the Kid Casino, birding, golfing, skiing, dude ranches, motorcycling, hiking and camping.
  Scenic drives include the Sunspot Scenic Byway, Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway, and the Guadalupe Backcountry Byway.
