Overview
Bordering the scenic Sangre de Cristo Mountains, New Mexico's northeast region of rolling flatlands is part of Americas Great Plains traveled by cowboys, soldiers, miners, outlaws and more. A good portion of the historic Sante Fe Trail runs through this region, where soldiers, quartered at Fort Union, protected the travelers in bygone days. Wild West history and folklore permeate the region with the likes of William "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Annie Oakley and Zane Grey, who were known to have stayed at the St. James Hotel in Cimarron. To the north, Las Vegas is home to Territorial-style buildings and Victorian homes still standing and in use today. Visitors enjoy fishing in the Conchas, Ute and McAllister Lakes and the Blue Hole, a natural pool outside of Santa Rosa, has become an international scuba diving destination. Parts of the original Route 66 run through the region.
State parks of this region include Cimarrón Canyon, Clayton Lake, Conchas Lake, Coyote Creek, Eagle Nest Lake, Morphy Lake, Storrie Lake, Sugarite Canyon, and Ute Lake. Additional attractions include the Blue Hole, Capulin Volcano National Monument, Cleveland Roller Mill Museum, Fort Union National Monument, Folsom Museum, Mesalands Community College's Dinosaur Museum, Pecos National Historical Park, Route 66 Auto Museum, the Ratón Historical District, Montezuma Castle and hot springs, Herztein Museum, Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands, and Dorsey Mansion.
Visitors and residents enjoy dude ranches and stables, fishing and angling, scuba diving, and golfing.
Scenic drives include the majority of the Sante Fe Trail National Scenic Byway, the Route 66 National Scenic Byway, the Mesalands Scenic Byway, the Dry Cimarron Scenic Byway, the La Frontera del Llano, and the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway.
