Overview
New Mexico's North Central region is
home to Sante Fe, the nations oldest capital city, and Taos, a world
class skiing venue. The diversity of the north central region is
apparent, from the peaks and valleys of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains
where visitors and residents enjoy skiing, hiking and rafting to the
areas museums, weaving shops, restaurants and galleries and artist
studios. There are Native American pueblos that give a glimpse into the
history of the region, including San Ildefonso, Taos Pueblo, Santa Clara
Pueblo, Nambe Pueblo, Picuris Pueblo, Pojoaque Pueblo, and the Tesuque
Pueblo.
Attractions of the region include the Abiquiú
Lake, Bandelier National Monument, Bradbury Science Museum, Cumbres &
Toltec Scenic Railroad, Echo Amphitheater, the El Rancho de Las
Golondrinas Living History Museum, Embudo Station and Pilar, the
Enchanted Circle, Georgia O'Keefe Museum, Harwood Museum of Art of the
Universy of New Mexico, La Hacienda de los Martinez, Millicent Rogers
Museum, Mine Shaft Museum and Tavern, Museum Hill, Museum of Indian Arts
& Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology, Museum of International Folk Art,
the New Mexico Museum of Art, Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs, Oñate
Monument and Visitors Center, the Palace of the Governors, Ranchos de
Taos Church, Red River State Trout Harchery, the Rio Grande Gorge
Bridge, the Sanctuario de Chimayó, Santa Fe National Forest, Taos Plaza,
Taos Ski Valley, Tsankawi Ruins, Valles Caldera National Preserve, the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park, Wheelwright Museum of the American
Indian, and the Wild Rivers Recreation Area.
There are also several casinos, hot air
ballooning, birding, biking, boating, camping, hiking, stables and dude
ranches, fishing, golfing, rafting, and skiing venues.
Scenic drives include part of the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway,
the Santa Fe National Forest Scenic Byway, part of the Santa Fe Trail
National Scenic Byway, the High Road to Taos, the Enchanted Circle
Scenic Byway, part of the El CaminoReal National Scenic Byway, and the
Wild Rivers Backcountry Byway.
