Town/City Overview

Napa Valley-area is at the northeastern tip of San Francisco Bay, about an hour’s drive north of San Francisco. Napa Valley, is approximately 30 miles long and five miles wide, incorporating five cities: American Canyon, Calistoga, Napa, St. Helena, and Yountville. Originally the Wappo Indians settled here before the Spanish arrived. In the early 1830s, some 10,000 lived in the valley. After the gold-rush era that made San Francisco prosperous, there was a demand for wine. By the early 1890s more than 600 vineyards made the Napa Valley their home. Prohibition made replacement crops a necessity so plum and walnut orchards were planted with a few vineyards that produced medicinal elixirs or sacramental wine for religious occasions staying the course. Now, there are more than 200 wineries throughout the county, along with restaurants, shops and scenic attractions that make this a year round getaway..
