review by Lisa Smith
It was on one of our many trips to visit our friend
'The Commodore', who lives just past Ensenada in Baja Mexico; that my Mom
and I discovered the band Wandana. A true music lover, The Commodore had
recommended going to The Palm Grill for it's weekend jazz performances,
food, and of course margaritas. After a hectic day of driving through LA
and San Diego traffic - the idea of a little music and margaritas seemed a
no-brainer - and as if by magic, the place somehow just appeared right off
the highway.
Getting out of the car I could hear the distinct sounds of a live band
just jamming it out, a gentle ocean breeze drifted by - yep, this was a
good idea so far. Next thing I knew, we were sitting nestled inside what
seemed to be an age old palm grove, with birds and butterflies fluttering
everywhere - and one of the coolest Latin jazz bands I have ever heard --
was our entertainment for the day.
Whether you're on the dance floor or sitting one out, one's body simply
cannot deny moving in some fashion to their music. Though they remain true
to their Mexican heritage, they take you on a musical journey from the
syncopated rhythms of Latin music into a lively jazz number accented by
the crisp sounds of society piano. You'll be swaying to a relaxed yet
powerful groove of reggae when the lead guitar bends and curves right into
the rawness of rock 'n roll and the jam of funk.
Playing together for over 5 years, Wandana is made up of lead guitarist,
vocalist and songwriter Adrian Paco; Adrian's cousin Oso Reynoso on drums;
Hector Zepeda on bass; and Daniel Fontez on keyboards. Influenced by
traditional Mexican and Latin root musicians like Cri-Cri, various
mariachi bands, and even Santana; they also enjoy Bob Marley, Deep Purple,
Elvis and Queen.
They currently have a CD - Wandana Latina Fusion - Pacific Coast, that is
out for sale; and they are working on their originals to come out on CD in
the winter. They perform regularly at the Palm Grill on Friday and
Saturday evenings during the winter. For details, call (011) 52-613-23564.
