Spotlight - Wensday
Compiled by Lisa D. Smith
Dubbed by
Alice Cooper as ‘The Other Girl Next Door’, this Phoenix based
singer songwriter kicks ass with her debut album ‘Torch Rock’ which
was produced by legendary rock guitarist Dick Wagner, and released
by the Phoenix based label, Desert Dreams.
‘Torch Rock’ – the name couldn’t be more appropriate for this songbird’s debut album. There’s simply no one like her. Her voice is rich and soulful, smoky with a touch of blues, tastefully jazzy, and rocks on like there’s no tomorrow.
The producer on
‘Torch Rock’ is legendary rock guitarist Dick Wagner (Alice Cooper,
Lou Reed, Kiss, Aerosmith), who helms Wensday's powerful reworking
of the Cooper classic he co-wrote, “Only Women Bleed”. Wensday's
powerful take on “Only Women Bleed” draws fresh and renewed
attention to its enduring theme of empowering women to overcome the
cycle of domestic abuse. The first song they wrote together when
Wensday moved to Phoenix was, appropriately enough, “Arizona Man,”
which is not only geographically relevant but also a declarative
statement about Wensday's ambition as a singer/songwriter.
We
recently interviewed Wensday on our radio show ‘Champagne Sundays’.
Sipping mimosas, Wensday told us about her childhood, and her
colorful life since graduating with a drama degree from NYU, working
as a body-piercer in tattoo parlors in Miami and Atlanta, and being
a teacher, director, vocal coach, playwright and Associate Director
at the All Children's Theatre in her hometown of Providence, Rhode
Island. She chatted with us about her music, the songs on the album
and what it was like to work with Dick Wagner, her musical
inspirations and where she sees herself in the future.
