Jon
Sherman - Eco Musician &
Flute Maker
Dedicating heart and breath in celebration and defense of California's endangered natural community and vanishing wilderness, eco-musician Jon Sherman expresses intent towards the balance and communion with the web of life. Seeing our environmental crisis being healed at the level of Spirit, Jon's music is an expression of that Spirit through a gentle, earth friendly style led by the song of his own handcrafted branch flutes.
Jon has
published two flute CDs, ‘Under The Oaks’ and ‘On The Marsh’,
every song inspired by a particular bird, with its authentic
vocalization woven throughout, serving as a motif for his flute
improvisations. His original spoken word poetry is featured on his
CD ‘Butterfly Blue’ which was inspired by the endangered Palos
Verdes Blue Butterfly and is dedicated to all creatures, in this
era of environmental imbalance, struggling for their existence.
Jon
has been making his own flutes, from trimmed or wind-felled tree
branches. He feels branch flutes to be an extension of the spirit
of the tree, inspiring both the making and playing. Now, as maker
of Dryad Flutes, Jon returns to the tree branches where his flute
playing began over 30 years ago
He performs frequently at many outdoor events, nature centers, art
shows, farmer's markets and environmental gatherings around the
Southwest. It is Jon's hope that his music might contribute to an
increasing awareness and appreciation for our feathered friends,
as well as our sense of connection with all of the natural
world.

CD Reviews
‘Under
the Oaks’: "Listening to this musical connection
between nature and man, one is immediately transported to a
calmness - similar to what you would feel when relaxing under an
oak tree, listening to the chatter of the birds, and the
rustling of the leaves. Jon Sherman is a master when it comes to
capturing the essence of nature and sharing its beauty." -

‘On
the Marsh’: On the Marsh is a wonderful example of
how man and nature can live together in harmony. Featuring the
authentic sounds of thirteen different bird species one might
hear at a California Salt Marsh, Jon Sherman’s flute playing
glides and soars around their sounds, forming a united sound of
bird and man. The songs are peaceful and beautiful, just as it
is being out in nature – or in this case, out in a salt marsh.
Jon is a true role model when it comes to shedding a light on
nature’s delicate eco-systems, encouraging us to remember the
beauty and the importance, beckoning us to play our parts - to
preserve and protect. - Lisa

‘Butterfly
Blue’: Inspired by the endangered Palos Verdes Blue
Butterfly, this album is a colorful tapestry of poetry, flute
playing, and singing, all woven together with light ethnic
rhythms – the pure sounds of nature. Just like the fluttering of
a butterfly, the melodies are beautifully gentle and flow with
inspiring words that pour with the emotion of a gushing
waterfall. Jon Sherman wears a badge for nature with this CD –
bringing forth all those wonderful little things about nature
that we often pass by without a glance, reminding us that Mother
Nature comes in all shapes and sizes, all colors, and holds
incredible powers. - Lisa D.
