Welcome
to Lakeside, California
Town/City Overview A peaceful, country feeling settles over you as you enter Lakeside, one of San Diego County’s original ‘Cowboy Country’ towns. It is obvious that rural atmosphere, spaciousness and a focus on family living are important to the area’s growth plans. Lakeside is just half an hour away from downtown San Diego and only minutes from mountains and deserts. With four lakes and eight parks in the area, there are great recreational opportunities within a natural setting. Lakeside is popular for it’s annual Rodeo and Western Days Parade. HISTORY:
In 1886, the El Cajon
Valley Land Company purchased the land - now known as Lakeside - and built
the four-story Lakeside Inn. The Inn was designed by the same architect
who designed the Hotel del Coronado. Eight trains ran through Lakeside a
day. On April 20, 1907, Barney Oldfield set a world speed record at the
race track that was built around Lindo Lake. Activities such as boating,
horse and auto racing, were popular with the Inn’s guests. (The original
Boathouse has been preserved at Lindo Lake Park). Lakeside soon became
recognized as a resort center.
