About Kanab Utah
Central to
northern Arizona; Denver, Colorado; and Salt Lake City, Utah; Kanab is in
close proximity to Zion National Park, Bryce National Park, the Grand
Canyon National Park, Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument, Lake
Powell National Recreational Area, and more. A quaint town with the
ambiance of the historic Old West, Kanab is home to a population of 5400
residents, and boasts an ideal climate with average winter temperatures of
47/23 degrees, and average summer highs and lows of 93/58 degrees.
The first inhabitants of the area were the Anasazi [Mo-Kee] Indians,
which is where the name Kanab [place of willows] in the Paiute language
comes from. In 1864, Fort Kanab was built as a base for exploration of the
area and as protection from the overwhelming attacks on settlers from the
region’s Indians. It eventually succumbed and the Fort closed down in
1866. In 1870, the Mormon Prophet Brigham Young and a handful of his
followers fell in love with the area and it’s isolation from the rest of
the country, and they reoccupied the Fort and laid out plans to build
Kanab into a permanent settlement.
Kanab has since played a major role over the years in the development of
the region, especially when the motion picture industry discovered it’s
beauty and isolation. Many major western movies and TV shows were produced
in the area including ‘She Wore a Yellow Ribbon’ and ‘Gun Smoke’, and soon
Kanab became known as ‘Little Hollywood’.
A trip to Kanab lets visitors relive the Old West, and experience some of
the country’s most spectacular scenery.
