Herbal Pet Care
Even though our pets are
domesticated, they retain their wild instincts if when they don't
feel well. The use of herbs can help, but if your pet is not well,
it is always pets to consult a veterinarian. Below are some simple
natural aids you might consider is your everyday pet care routine.
Pets have a shorter digestive tracks than humans and for that
reason, herbs are best administered as a herbal infusion mixed with
their food. Small amounts for small pets, larger amounts for larger
pets.
Flea Powder: 1
tsp dried rosemary, 1 tsp crushed fennel seeds, 1 tsp dried wormwood
and 1 tsp dried rue. Mix together the dried herbs and comb sparingly
into your pet's hair. Washing your pets bedding and soaking it's
collar in a strong rosemary infusion can also help.
Lice and Fly
Deterrent: Bunches of tansy, pyrethrum and dried wormwood hung
by bedding with deter lice an flies.
Tonics to relieve
stress: Pets that upset easily over travel, thunderstorms or
sudden loud noises can be given Chamomile tea to induce calmness.
It is also an excellent cleanser and toner for the digestive tract
and expels parasites while improves condition of the coat. For cats,
one tablespoon of chamomile tea added to their food works and for
dogs, depending on their size, up to three tablespoons. Valerian
works for fussy cats at 3-4 drops of valerian tisane added to their
food.
Worming: 1/2-1
full raw garlic clove minced, added to 1 tsp - 2 tbsp of brewer's
yeast (dependent on your pets size and to disguise the smell of the
garlic) mixed together will make a palatable worming mixture and is
also good for your pets coat. Take into consideration the size of
your pet and do not administer to dogs under six months old.
Catnip Toys: Dry
catnip leaves and use them as a fill for small toys for your cats.
Again, these are not
used to cure your pet of ailments. If your pet is sick, consult your
veterinarian.
