 The
New Food Pyramid!
The U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) has changed the food pyramid in an effort
to show us how to eat healthier. The biggest change is that the food
groups are no longer horizontal blocks of the pyramid, but are now rainbow
colored vertical stripes representing each of the five food groups. Here’s
what the colors stand for:
orange - grains
green - vegetables
red - fruits
blue - milk and dairy products
purple - meat, beans, fish, and nuts
yellow - oils
They have used a
figure climbing stairs to represent both exercise and that you can change
your eating habits one step at a time.
Eat a variety of
foods--a balanced diet is one that includes all the food groups. The
emphasis is still on a balanced diet, eating from each food group--but
less of some foods and more of others. The bands for meat and protein
(purple) and oils (yellow) are thinner than the others--making it clear
that you need less of those foods than your fruits, vegetables, grains,
and dairy foods.
