About Ensenada, Baja
California
Known as the ‘Cinderella of the Pacific,’
Ensenada was first
discovered in 1542 by Portuguese navigator Don Juan Rodriguez.
Ensenada is not only the largest county, but is also Baja’s leading
seaport and 3rd largest city.
Ensenada’s coastal climate is similar to
San Diego’s offering sunny summers with cooling coastal breezes, and
mild winters with a little rainfall.
Ensenada is a highly traditional, cultural and outdoor activity based
city. There are numerous historic missions to visit, at least six
museums and many art galleries in Ensenada proper, giving the
community a plethora of information on the history and culture of
Mexico. Ensenada also boasts of a fabulous nightlife with a variety
of restaurants, clubs and bars including the historic Hussong’s
Cantina, Baja California’s oldest bar established in 1892. Tour
Baja’s wine country in Valle de Guadalupe, just east of Ensenada,
and enjoy wine tasting and fine dining, and visit historic missions
and museums. From horseback riding to water sports, whale watching
to hiking, and from golf to tennis, there are a wide variety of
outdoor activities to enjoy as well as two national parks to visit.
One of the most popular things to do is visit La Bufadora (The Blowhole)
a natural cave formed by marine erosion. A gush of water shoots 24
feet up when the ocean waves enter the cave, producing the distinct
sound associated with its name. This amazing natural phenomena spews
foam and water into the air as excited spectators watch. La Bufadora
has recently been renovated with handicapped access, observation
decks, lighting, and botanical gardens making the experience much
more enjoyable for everyone who comes to see it.
One of the best ways to experience Ensenada is on foot. Get a walking tour map from the Ensenada Tourism Bureau and visit museums and gardens, art galleries, the city’s famous shopping district featuring jewelry, pottery, designer clothing, handmade arts and crafts and more. Stroll the waterfront malecón boardwalk, tour the marinas, and visit Baja California’s largest open-air seafood market and sample Ensenada’s original invention, the fish taco. Visit one of the many restaurants for a bite to eat or relax with a refreshing margarita.
Travel Tips
* Ensenada is easily accessible from San Diego, California, and is
located just 70 miles south of the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa
international borders, and about 2 hours from the Tecate border
following Highway 3. The paved Transpeninsular Toll Highway (Mexico
1-D) is a breathtaking scenic drive between Tijuana and Ensenada.
Along this route, free motorist assistance is provided by Mexico’s

* Mexican auto insurance is highly recommended, and motorists should
carry a valid driver’s licenses and proof of vehicle ownership.
* Ensenada is served by six major Mexican airlines that fly in and
out of the Tijuana Airport, which is just over an hour away.
* If your visit to Baja exceeds 72 hours, or if you travel more than
100 km. south of the border, you will need a tourist card (FM-T),
which is available at the first port of entry, at the borders, or at
a Mexican consulate or embassy.
* The US dollar is accepted by most businesses except for buses, and
most large restaurants, store and hotels accept credit cards.
* It is illegal to use your cell phone whilst driving.
* If you are stopped by a police officer for a traffic violation,
politely insist on a written citation that you can pay at either the
police station or by mail.
* For assistance when it comes to traffic violations, emergencies,
or general information situations dial the Tourist Hotline – 078.
For emergencies, you can also call the Emergency Response Hotline –
