About Elko, Nevada
Elko is located in east central Nevada, at 5067 feet above sea level, and right on Highway 80. It is believed the area now called Elko, Nevada, was first inhabited 10,000 or more years ago, before their first contact with white explorers and trappers from Europe took place in about 1826. From 1826 to the early 1840s settlers traveled west to Sacramento, California, along the Humboldt riverbed and through Elko, Nevada, including the famous Donner Party. The stagecoach carrying settlers, freight and mail was among the earliest form of transportation - as early as 1851, until in 1858 when the Central Pacific Railroad reached the area, and Elko was essentially born. On March 5^th in 1869, the State legislature made Elko, Nevada the county seat and by 1869, Elko’s population grew to 2,000 people. At present Elko has grown to over 35,000 people, and has become the hub of northeastern Nevada.
