About Casa Grande, Az
Casa Grande’s 38,000
residents live at an elevation of 1,398 feet above sea level, in a 70
square mile area in the center of the metropolitan corridor that is 45
miles from Phoenix, and an hour from Tucson. Conveniently located at the
intersection of two major interstates I-10 and I-8, Casa Grande is a hub
to the major trading markets in the southwest, where residents and
tourists alike, refer to it as "the heart of Arizona".
Founded in 1879, and incorporated in 1915, Casa Grande is named for the
famous Hohokam ruins found just 20 miles northeast. Casa Grande is the
second largest city in Pinal County, and can trace its beginnings to the
summer of 1879, when Southern Pacific Railroad workers had to stop laying
tracks due to the heat. This caused supplies to build up until work could
resume in that winter of 1870. A small depot was constructed to hold the
surplus, and the spot became known as the community of Terminus, meaning
‘end-of-the-line’. Railroad executives later renamed the stop Casa Grande
as the railroad was finished.
Case Grande used to be totally dependent on its agriculture and mining,
but has since evolved into a full service community boasting of
manufacturing, retail trade, and tourism. Today Casa Grande’s year-round
mild climate and location make it a very attractive place to visit, or
start a family or small business.
