By Lisa D. Smith A story of family heritage and neighborhood warmth blended in with some of the area’s best Mexican cuisine. Lola’s is run by three sisters - Ofie, Connie and Frances. In 1943, their father, Reyes Jauregui, first opened it as a market across the street from it’s present location. It remained the neighborhood market known as Jaure’s Market, through the late 50’s until it was rented out as a candy warehouse, then a Mexican product warehouse, and in 1991 they developed it into the Barrio Museum, featuring local and neighborhood history. Now the neighborhood is popular for it’s annual Fiesta del Barrio event held every September, celebrating Mexican culture and history. In 1986, the three sisters reopened the market across from the museum and named it after their mother, Ofie. Their uncle had a 7-Up store, so being a family oriented business they named it Lola’s 7-Up Mexican Market and Deli. Today, Lola’s is a friendly neighborhood hangout for all ages. Everyone knows each other and visitors delight in seeing the neighborhood children ride up on their bicycles to fill their pockets with candy - which they still sell by the handful! The deli is one of Carlsbad’s most frequented lunch hot-spots. After school, you will see youngsters fill up on their favorites: bean and cheese burritos or chicken taquitos, and for hungry adults; chili rellenos, tacos, cheese enchiladas and tamales are tasty specialties. Stop by for a bite and a good chat with Ofie and Connie, and take in the strong values and community spirit that has been built up in their cozy deli and market over the years. Ofie and Connie are well respected community leaders in Carlsbad earned through endeavors such as the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, Fiesta del Barrio Carlsbad, Carlsbad Village Business Assoc., Youth Enrichment Services, North County Latina, and The Mexican Heritage Foundations.
