$uccessful
with Words
Writing Goals
by Maralyn D. Hill, Co-Author ‘$uccess,
Your Path to a Successful Book’
Ask yourself, how serious are
you about your writing? Is it
something you want as a hobby,
an avocation or a vocation? Be
honest with yourself, as any
answer is the choice
that works for you.
If you want to submit articles
or write a book, then you need
to allocate time to crafting
your skills. Now with the
Internet, anyone can be
published. But remember, once
something is in print, your
strengths and weaknesses are
forever. Spelling matters and so
does grammar.
Determine how much time you can
devote to writing each day.
Whether it is 10 minutes or
several hours, commit to making
it happen. Usually, a particular
time works better than winging
it. Those who consistently
write during the same time
period each day produce more
finished work. Their time
doesn’t “get away from them.”
When I write first thing in the
morning, before e-mail, I turn
out more work. Many writers find
working late at night is when
they can squeeze in the time. Do
what works for you. If you fall
off track for a few days or a
week, start again.
If you want others to take your
writing seriously, you have to
take it seriously.
Take time to read what others
write. I personally try to have
a fiction and non-fiction book
going at the same time. It helps
me learn on a technical basis as
well as a relaxing basis. Plus,
you learn more about hooks,
character development,
resolution and other writing
techniques. Others are the best
teachers.
Do you want to write to record
your thoughts or feelings? That
is quite positive. Journaling is
considered a great path to
writing—whether for yourself or
to lead into a more detailed
article or book, months or years
later when you may have the
time, desire or inclination.

Planning to write articles? Then you need to discover
the magazines that are appropriate for your subject.
Once you have found several, read past issues--at least
three to six. It’s important to learn the style of the
publisher and editor. Then write your article to conform
to their guidelines.
Books
are an entirely different subject which require more of a commitment to
research, writing, and marketing. Be sure you read articles or books on
the state of the publishing industry. Naturally, I think the book I
wrote with Brenda C. Hill, “Success, Your Path to a Successful Book,” is
one you should read. But there are others that are equally as good.
Understand that agents are difficult to find and publishers more
difficult. Less than 1% of books submitted to publishers are accepted
for publication. Understand that you may have to use an independent
publisher. Whether independent or traditional, be sure to check out
contracts thoroughly.
Next,
what I usually include in most columns, is marketing. You have to be
willing to market yourself and your book. If you are not willing to
market yourself, your book may only be for friends and family. That is
fine if you are realistic about the outcome. Many times, the process of
writing your book is itself your reward.
My goal
with this is not to discourage you, but help you face the reality of
your commitment to writing. |

Our Mission:
Our Mission: "Big Blend Magazine is a company based on the belief that education is the most formidable weapon that can be waged against fear, ignorance and prejudice.
It is our belief that education starts at
home and branches outward. Education leads to travel, and
travel leads to understanding, tolerance, and appreciation
of cultures and customs different to our own, and ultimately
to world peace. Our company is further based on the
principle that networking, communication, and helping others
to promote and market themselves leads to financial
stability; thus paving the way to better education, travel,
and the spirit of giving back to the community." |
