Book Review- The Forgotten Artists

The Forgotten ArtistsThe Forgotten Artist, Indians of Anza-Borrego and Their Rock Art by Manfred Knaak, is truly an impressive study presented in a beautiful manner. It reads like a novel, drawing the reader into the life of early man in such a way that you feel you are one of them. I found it exciting and creative--from the writing--to the photography--to the unique understanding and sensitivity the author possesses for his subject. It makes me want to re-visit the sites where I have seen rock art, now armed with more knowledge, to have another look. I can’t help thinking that if history was taught with as much empathy as Manfred Knaak has for our ancestors, we would have more appreciation for the steps mankind has gone through in his development.

For those who love the mystery of the desert and it’s early dwellers, this has to be added to your library. You can purchase the book at the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association Store in Borrego Springs.-Review by Nancy J. Reid.
